Have you noticed the starting points of your child’s “talking”? Do they coo and chatter in response to anything you say? Congratulations, you have reached the next stage of your baby’s development! Babies communicate in their way with everyone around them. Babies often progress from cooing and gurgling to first words between the ages of 3 and 12 months, so make sure to assist them in this process.

As your trusted daycare provider, we’d like to give some pointers on how you can help your child’s speech skills. These are very simple tactics that you can use anywhere and at any time.

First and foremost, talk to your child. Explain to them, for example, what you’re doing around the house and why. During this period, newborns memorize new knowledge that they understand. You can also read a storybook together before going to bed.

To encourage two-way dialogue, repeat your baby’s attempts at words. For example, if your infant says “mom,” you could respond “mama.” You can also build on your baby’s words by repeating them. When baby says “train” you respond, “Yes, it’s a big red train” Responding to sounds or colors that correspond to specific objects is also beneficial.
